For our second time at Little Flower, we were not disappointed yet again.  I had one of the best overall meals of the 2015 fish fry tour at Little Flower.  The salmon is amazing, the cole slaw was deliciously unique, and the mac and cheese was dynamite.  Throw a delicious roll and a chocolate chip cookie in there and you’ve got yourself a great dinner.  Make sure to get there early as they ran out of salmon at one point of the night.  This is most likely because they don’t’ have fish frys every Friday in Lent like some churches do.  There are some great and delicious options besides dinner to sample such as nachos, pretzels, spinach-artichoke dip, and of course the famous fried mac & cheese balls.  Just try not to spoil your dinner by eating too many of them in line.  We love this fish fry and will try to visit as often as we can.  Keep up the good work, and keep using that sauce recipe.  Love it!!
 

Fish and Main Dishes (4 of 5)

VARIETY:  Fried Cod or Grilled Salmon.  Not very many options, relatively speaking.

TASTE:  If you don’t get the salmon, you will regret it.  If you don’t like salmon or sort of don’t like it, still get it.  The salmon does not taste fishy at all, and the sauce they put on top of it I could drink out of a cup it is so good!  The fried cod was good, but it was very salty.

VALUE:  $9 for a salmon meal, $8 for a 2-piece fried cod meal, and $6 for a one-piece fried cod meal.  The meal includes 2 sides, a roll, and dessert.
 
CONDIMENTS:  Squeezable bottles of ketchup, tartar sauce, and sriracha sauce.  Butter tubs also available.
 

Side Dishes (5 of 5)

VARIETY:  Cole Slaw, Green Beans, Mac & Cheese, Fried Mac & Cheeseballs French Fries, and Applesauce.

TASTE:  The cole saw was excellent.  I need the recipe it was so good.  Vinegar based, it was full of flavor.  The mac & cheese balls are the same that they hand out in line while you wait.  DELICIOUS!  The mac & cheese is also very good.  The green beans were average.  Didn’t get a taste of the applesauce or french fries.

VALUE:  Generous portions.  Not sure how much extra sides cost.
 

Beverages and Desserts (4 of 5)

BEVERAGES: They have an actual bar area in the cafeteria.  The selection of soda includes Coke, Diet Coke, 7up, and Dr. Pepper for $1.  Bottled Water is also $1.  Bud, Bud Light, and Bud Select are available for $2 per ca.  They had Urban Chestnut Zwickel on tap for $3 per glass, which is a deal.  They also have a selection of red and white wines for $3 per glass.  I was surprised that no beverages were included with dinner.  Maybe we just missed them.

DESSERTS: The dessert table wasn’t enormous with unending choices like some fish frys, but they did have a nice selection of chocolatey desserts.  The cookie I had was good.
 

Atmosphere and Extras (5 of 5)

This was our second time to Little Flower.  The atmosphere there is fantastic, which is a result of all of the extras they have going during the fish fry.  They had the NCAA basketball game on TV, they have a two-person team handing out homemade fried mac & cheese balls in line while you wait, and the girl scouts were selling appetizers/snack for $2 (nachos, pretzel w/ cheese, or spinach artichoke dip.  Tables were being bussed quickly and the place seems to be kept very clean.  Great fish fry atmosphere.  The only problem is the limited space of the room.  The cafeteria isn’t huge, but maybe that keeps this as one of the best kept secrets on the fish fry tour!
 

Signage, Flow, and Line (3 of 5)

I didn’t pay too much attention to the signage outside the fish fry, so there could have been some indicating to passers-by about the fish fry.  The line started outside the front of the school, which didn’t allow for too many people in line without waiting outside.  It was a little chilly.  Once we made it through the line to pay, the line was wrapped around 3 sides of the gymnasium, and it moved slowly compared to other fish fry lines I’ve waited in.  The fantastic atmosphere and things happening help distract you from the waiting part.  I felt like there could have been more signage indicating the menu, but I suppose the only place the menu is needed is at the cashier.  There was also a menu right before you are served.  I also feel like there could have been other signs hung high up to see across the room for the beverages, desserts, and the girl scouts, but we were able to find our way just fine.  The flow of the line was fine, it just moved very slowly.

This was our second trip to the St. Joan of Arc fry, but our first visit as the Men of Cod. This visit proved better than out last. This is a fry that has seen marked improvement in overall quality and variety of food since our first visit four years ago.  If you're in the area, stop by. The folks are friendly, and time in the line passes quickly, we promise.  Make sure to get a taste of the broccoli parmesan and the irish potatoes.  Two of the best sides we've tasted at any fish fry.  The food dominiated the overall experience at St. Joan of Arc.  Delicious stuff.  Watch out for that line of people, though!

VARIETY:  $8.00 for an adult plate of fried cod, jack salmon, popcorn shrimp, or catfish nuggets; $8.50 for baked cod. The adult plate includes a large piece of fish along with 2 sides and 2 slices of bread. Sodas and coffee are $0.50 and beer is just $2.00. Beer selection is limited, and coke products are available. Check out the full menu in the photos below. 

TASTE:  We tried the fried cod and catfish nuggets, which were both great. The portions of catfish nuggets and popcorn shrimp were healthy.

CONDIMENTS:  Many condiments were available from a variety of containers served by spoon. A plus. The tartar sauce was amazing.

VARIETY:  Mac n' Cheese, Spaghetti, Irish Potatoes, Cole Slaw, Green Beans, Broccoli Parmesan, Apple Sauce, French Fries. 

TASTE:  We tried the Mac & Cheese, Green Beans, Spaghetti, Broccoli, & Slaw. Last week's green beans rocked our world (it is hard to top sautéed green beans); this week, though, we were impressed by the texture and flavor of the green beans. These too will be hard to beat! You can't go wrong with the spaghetti, either. It was top-notch. The Mac & Cheese and Slaw were average.  Last but not least, there is the broccoli parmesan.  If you're luck enough to go through line before they are sold out, you'd better order that.  Its dynamite.

VALUE:  Hearty portions. Extra sides are $3.00/16 oz and $6.00/32 oz.  We ordered an extra side and weren't charged for it.... we're not sure if they are set up for selling an extra single serving of a side dish.

​The cafeteria was decorated nicely, matching table cloths. There is a quilt raffle and the option to sign up as a bone marrow donor.  The youth did a nice job keeping the tables bussed and the cafeteria neat and tidy.

The signage outside was a little lacking, aside from a giant sign on Hampton.  The church is easy to find, but there are few signs directing folks to the cafeteria. We knew because we had been before, but it isn't obvious if you enter the side door by the gym.  One deterrent we found was the giant line cutting the room in half.

The line, while long, flowed nicely, however, the line cuts the room in half, making it difficult to navigate throughout the room without negotiating around or through the line of people.  There are two serving lines - one for carry out and one for dine-in.  When the carry out line is empty, dine-in customers may use the carry out line.  This would be less intrusive if it wrapped around the perimeter of the room.

St. Joseph’s fish fry started as an overwhelming trip through the  brand new parish center, complete with plenty of menus, signs, and friendly staff pointing us in the direction of the fish fry.  We had a short wait in line to pay, followed by a short wait to get our food.  Luckily for us we had enough cash between the two of us to get one small meal each since they do not take credit cards.  The fried cod was tasty but heavy on the oil and batter.  I’d like to get the vinegar-based cole slaw recipe from them because it was absolutely delicious!  The green beans are highly recommended as well.  Don’t forget to miss the dessert table because it has more than something for everyone.  Wash it all down with a good selection of beverages including water, tea, coffee, soda, milk, beer, or wine.  St. Joseph’s was a great fish fry experience for us.  Next time we’ll have to try the fish tacos!

VARIETY:  Baked or Fried Cod, Fried Shrimp, Fish Tacos, and Cheese Pizza for the kids and non-fish lovers.

TASTE:  The Fried Cod was tasty but we found it a little heavy on the batter.  It was similar to the fried fish at Long John Silvers.

VALUE:  $9 for an adult meal which included 2 sides, dessert, bread, and tea or coffee.  See the photos for the full menu.  Credit Cards NOT Accepted at St. Joseph’s

CONDIMENTS:  Squeezable bottles in ice bowls of ketchup, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce.  Butter tubs also available

TASTE:  The cole slaw was vinegar-based and was absolutely delicious!  Don’t miss the train on this one!  The green beans were delicious also.  The French fries were extremely thin like Steak ‘n’ Shakes, so I wasn’t a huge fan, but Aaron really liked them.  We didn’t get a taste of the applesauce.

VALUE:  Generous portions.  $1.00 per extra side dish serving.

BEVERAGES: Tea and coffee were included with dinner.  Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite are available for $0.50 each as well as milk for $0.50.  They have Budweiser, Bud Light, or Bud Select Beer for $2 each plus 4 types of wine for $3 per glass.

DESSERTS: They had a giant table of desserts with tons of different selections.  I chose the red velvet cream cookies and Aaron chose the pineapple upside-down cake.  Both were very good.  I considered getting an additional dessert for $1 since they were both so good, but I was out of cash and they didn’t take credit cards.

This was our first time to St. Joseph’s in Manchester and they have a very nice new parish center.  Everything looked very clean and new.  They have a few LCD TVs displaying the menu along the way which were quite impressive.  The staff was very friendly and very attentive to clearing tables and attending to the patron’s needs.  Added bonuses to their menu include fish tacos, milk, and clam chowder for $2 per bowl.  St. Joseph’s definitely goes beyond the average fish fry with their menu items and provides a clean, friendly atmosphere for people of all ages.  We would definitely come back to St. Joseph’s!

Signage and Flow of Line (5 of 5)

St. Joseph’s does a great job with providing signage to the coveted fried fish on Frydays.  Starting with giant signs out on Sulphur Springs, you’ll have no problem getting into the correct parking lot and finding the correct door.  There was even someone outside opening the door for people coming and going.  Once you’re inside there are TONS of signs pointing the way to the fish fry.  They had a few people directing people the correct way, too.  Menus were posted everywhere including a few LCD TVs showing the menu and prices.  St. Joseph’s really knocked it out of the park with their signage.  The flow of the line was great, too.  We spent very little time waiting.  Great Job!

Once again, we returned to the place where it all started... the place where Aaron first tasted the fellowship of a Lenten fish fry. The fried cod was right on for a classic fish fry, and the gym will definitely take you back.  We had a great time visiting Immaculate Conception for the second time, and will be back. The people are great, and the atmosphere warm. Don't leave this one without buying a raffle ticket! When visiting this fry, we suggest the fried cod paired with spaghetti and green beans.


FIsh and Main Dishes (3 of 5)

Variety:  Fried or Baked Cod, Fried Jack Salmon, Fried Catfish, or Fried Shrimp.

Taste:  The fried cod was very good for a rectangular fish patty.  One of the best patties like that we’ve tasted.  The baked cod was just ok.  We recommend the fried cod.  We didn’t get a taste of the jack salmon or catfish.

Value:  $8.50 for an adult plate of fried cod, jack salmon or catfish; $9.00 for baked cod; and $10.50 for plate with 8 shrimp.  The adult plate includes 2 pieces of fish along with 2 sides and 2 slices of bread.  Check out the full menu in the photos below.

Condiments:  The usual condiments (ketchup, tartar, cocktail sauce) are available from pump containers.  Paper serving cups are provided so you don't have to pump directly onto your plate (think Lion's Choice or Arby's). One tub labeled "salad dressing" was available.  Frank’s Hot Sauce was on the table as well as a giant shaker of parmesan cheese.  Gotta love the parm!!

Taste: We tried the Mac & Cheese, Green Beans, Spaghetti, & Slaw. This is your typical fish fry in a gym. The staff was super-friendly and the two nice ladies we spoke to behind us in line were very friendly.  They were selling some raffle tickets and some car magnets.  They also had a special window for soda and beer with a dedicated bartender. 
 

Signage and Flow of Line

The signage was pretty decent.  Signs out on the main road and a couple more along the way in.  Once you are inside the door, you can immediately begin to make your selection on eyeing the menu. The line flows right into the gym. The only downside here is that the payment is at the end of the line and can hold up the line, especially if a credit card is used. A second money-handler could be put on duty during busy times to speed up the line.

Kicking off the 2015 fish fry season set the bar pretty high on a lot of levels.  First off, the hand-breaded cod was one for the books.  Such great seasoning and warm, flaky cod goodness inside.  Some of the best cod I’ve found since I’ve been hitting the fish fry tour.  The sautéed green beans and the mac & cheese bites topped my favorite off the list of sides.  Don’t miss out on the green beans!!

I wasn’t feeling 100% and was a little hesitant on even leaving the house, however, the fine folks at St. Stephen made our visit warm and welcoming.  The fish fry posters hung in the cafeteria are a great addition to the fish fry atmosphere, along with the TV (if you’re looking to keep tabs on the game), and the 505/50 if you feeling lucky.  You should have no problem finding the fish fry inside St. Stephen because they do an excellent job of posting signs and what not to guide you to the correct location for carry-out or dine-in.  Great job St. Stephen!  This is a fish fry I would visit again in the future.

VARIETY:  Baked/Fried Cod, Fish Tacos (Soft Shell), Herb-crusted Tilapia, Fried Shrimp, and Cheese Pizza for the kids and non-fish lovers.

CONDIMENTS:  Individual packets of ketchup, tartar, and cocktail sauces.  Tubs of butter were also available.  Salt and pepper shakers were on every table.  BONUS!

VARIETY:  Cole Slaw, Sautéed Green Beans, Spaghetti, Mac & Cheese Bites, and French Fries.  Apparently other sides that make it into the rotation include rice pilaf, baked beans, and sweet potato fries, but they were not an option when we visited.

TASTE:  The cole slaw was vinegar-based and tasted pretty average.  The green beans were extremely delicious and it’s a good thing my fiancé ordered them or I wouldn’t have had a taste.  WOW!  The crinkle French fries were pretty good, and how can you go wrong with fried mac & Cheese bites!  The hush puppies were good, but nothing special.

VALUE:  Generous portions.  $1.50 per extra side dish serving.

BEVERAGES: Tea, water, lemonade, and coffee were complimentary.  Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite cans for $0.75.  They had a red and white wine selection for $2 per glass, Bud Light on tap for $3 ($6 pitchers), and a good selection of microbrews including Schlafly APA, Goose Island Honker’s Ale, Goose Island Urban Pale Ale, and Shock Top.

DESSERTS: Not a whole lot of selection for dessert or we missed the bulk of the selection when we arrived at 6:25 pm.  I wasn’t feeling well so I skipped dessert.  My fiancé said the yellow cupcake with chocolate icing was too good to share!
 

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)

The atmosphere at the fish fry was very welcoming and friendly.  Its seemed like a part of each person’s day to be there and like everyone, even the workers, wanted to be there doing what they were doing.  In addition to the food and drink portion of the fish fry they had a 50/50 raffle they were selling tickets for, a TV with the college basketball game on, flower vases with American flags on each table, and very attentive table bussers ready to clear your plate or try out of your way when you are finished.  As an added bonus, they had salt and pepper shakers on the table instead of having to use little packets!  One added bonus that I also like is that they apparently have a “catch of the day” each week featuring a different main dish.  What a great idea!  We really liked the atmosphere here.  It looked like some of the students or faculty (because the artwork was so good) had created unique fish fry posters and hung them up throughout the cafeteria.  They were great and many of them really funny.  Check them out in the photo section below.  The atmosphere is one of the main features of a fish fry that draws me back again in the future, and this one is no exception.

We found rock star parking, so it was obvious where the door to go in was; however, the signage to get you to the fish fry was excellent.  No secrets as to where to turn to get that tasty cod goodness.  There are giant detailed menus posted in almost every room around every corner including a wall with chalkboard paint with the menu written on it large enough to see from across the room.  I snapped a photo of it so you can check it out in the photos section.  We arrived relatively late so we didn’t experience much of a line.  Two thumbs up in this department for sure!

Closing out the fish fry season is always bittersweet.  This year was no exception.  With the final landing at St. George (combined with St. Dominic Savio) we were excited to visit another new fish fry (for us at least) and visit with some family, too.  The St. George fish fry was a simple, yet well-planned fish fry.  They have a wide selection of fried and baked fish to order plus a wide variety of tasty sides.  Order the Mac & Cheese and you won’t be disappointed.  Add toasted raviolis on top of the already diverse selection, and you have something for everyone. 

There’s not much hoopla going on other than serving food and drinks, and you’ll definitely be able to find your way once you find a parking spot.  If you’re looking for a fish fry with a lot of food options and a place to spend an hour or two chatting with folks, the fish fry at St. George is perfect for you.  If you’re looking for raffles, music or anything outside the basic fish fry, you might want to find another fish fry to go to.  While the dessert selection was lacking, it makes up with delicious fish and sides.  Great fish fry everyone!!

TASTE:  The fried cod was pretty good for a frozen fish patty.  The fried catfish was good, as was the fried shrimp.  I didn’t get to taste the Alaskan White

VALUE:  $7.50 for a fish dinner with two sides.  $5 for a fish sandwich with no sides, and $4 for an extra portion of fish (with dinner purchase only).
 
CONDIMENTS:  Individual packets of ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, butter, a bowl of grated parmesan cheese, fresh lemon wedges, marinara sauce, and bottles of maple syrup.

VARIETY:  Mostaccioli, Cole Slaw, Green Beans, Hush Puppies, Apple Sauce, and Mac & Cheese.
 
TASTE:  I recommend ordering the mac & cheese.  It was very cheesy and delicious.  The mostaccioli was very good, especially with the fresh parmesan cheese.  The green beans and slaw were good, too.  I didn’t try the applesauce or the hush puppies

VALUE:  Good sized portions.  $1.50 per extra side dish.

Everyone working at the fish fry was extremely nice and good spirited.  We saw our McLaughlin part of the family which is always a pleasure, so the definitely boosted the good atmosphere.  Not much else but food and drinks going on at the fish fry, but that allows them to focus on the quality.  They had cheese-filled toasted raviolis available for $3 for 6 pieces.  St. George also had recycling trash cans around the room.  Great job!!

With plenty of signs outside the church and along the way in, you definitely know which way to go for “dine-in” and “Carry-out.”  They had plenty of menus posted inside as well.  If you get lost, you’re probably texting too much or not paying attention.  There are plenty of signs directing you where you want to go.

Before going to St. Ferdinand I was very excited to see what all the hype was all about since they are known to have some of the best cod in town, and I heard they've been doing a fish fry every Friday now for decades.  While the location is tucked in a neighborhood, ample parking for everyone, the atmosphere of that good classic fish fry was missing from what I'm used to.  The fish selections are great, and the cod tastes fantastic.  The fried cod definitely lives up to all the hype.  The layout and method of serving and selling of food is quite different than I'm used to, however, the room was full, so they are doing something right!  If you're looking for a place to stop in and pick up food for the family or a party on your way home, this is the perfect place to go.  If you're looking for a fun evening with stuff to do for the kids and an evening of fellowship, I might try another fish fry.  Great cod, though!  Its worth a visit if you're doing the fish fry "tour," as its been called.

TASTE:  I tried the fried cod and it was white, fluffy, and flaky.  Definitely top notch cod. 

VALUE:  Fish is sold by the pound a la carte.  $11.50 per pound for fried cod, baked cod, fried cajun catfish, and fried regular catfish.  $10 per pound for broken ends of fish.  $1 per piece of fried shrimp.  Bread cost $0.20 per slice.

CONDIMENTS:  Individual small containers of ketchup, tartar sauce, and parmesan cheese for $0.30 each.

Side Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Spaghetti, Cabbage Slaw, French Fries, and Regular or Jalapeno Hush Puppies

TASTE:  All sides tasted average.  Nothing too special in this department, but this could be because I seemed to get the scraping off the bottom of the pan for each the spaghetti and the cole slaw.

VALUE:  Sides are sold a la carte in bulk.  $1.75 per serving, $3.25 per pint, and $4.75 per quart.

BEVERAGES:  Water is complimentary with dinner.  They have Coke products, coffee, milk, or iced tea for $1 for 12 oz., $1.50 for a 16 oz. and $2.25 for a 32 oz.  Beer choices include Busch and Bud Light for $2 per 12 oz., $2.50 for a 16 oz. and $4 for a 32 oz.

DESSERTS: The desserts were displayed on the counter that you could look at while standing in line.  The selection wasn’t very abundant, but they do offer baked apples, ice cream, and ice cream floats.  We didn’t elect to have a dessert since it was our second fish fry and the selection wasn’t to our taste.  See the photos section for the pricing on desserts.

The walk into the fish fry was the best part of the atmosphere with the various ribbons and decorations in the foyer.  Once we entered the cafeteria it seemed like chaos.  It was our first time here and we weren’t sure where the line started.  It definitely seemed like everyone else knew what was up, though.  Once we found our table we realized we were sitting under a vent which was quite cold and very strong to just be a vent.  Low marks on the atmosphere because there wasn’t much going on here except people eating fish or people ordering in bulk and taking it home.  The people serving the food were very young and sat there and mindlessly stirred the food and seemed to care little about the overall operation of the fish fry.  This took away from the experience for me.  Its a far stretch from a tight team with matching aprons working like a well oiled machine that I've seen at other places.

Signage and Flow of Line (1 of 5)

Hopefully you know where you’re going when you get to St. Ferdinand because other than following the flow of people in and out of one entrance, it wasn’t perfectly clear which way to go.  Once we followed our nose into the cafeteria, we noticed that the line was rectangular with 3 registers and no signs.  We were thoroughly confused and just sort of stumbled into the correct place in line after asking a few people who were waiting what the story was.  The line also moved pretty slowly.  It seemed to us that since St. Ferdinand does a fish fry every Friday they would have this figured out by now.

Overall (4 of 5)

Our visit to St. Rose Phillipine Duchesne was highly anticipated for a number of reasons.  I have read many reviews that they have the best cod in town.  Unfortunately for us, we live nowhere near SRPD.  Secondly, I found out Father Tom Wyrsch has been assigned to SRPD, and we go way back.  It was great to talk to him again.  The fish fry at SRPD is great.  If you haven't been, you need to make the trip up there.  While a little unconventional compared to the many others we have been to since this adventure started, the cod is excellent, so fill up on that and not the sides.  They sell the cod by the pound, and everything else ala carte instead of including everything in one price.  If you get a side, get the spaghetti, and maybe get a cup or bowl of the clam chowder, too.  Make sure to say "hi" to Father Tom and that you're visiting because of Fish Fryday Review!!
 

Fish and Main Dishes (5 of 5)


VARIETY:  Baked or Fried Cod and Fried Shrimp.  Fried Cod is sold by the pound, not per dinner.
 
TASTE:  The fried cod fillet was soft and flaky and delicious.  I've been wanting to taste the fish at St. Rose Phillipine Duchesne for a while now, and it was definitely worth all the hype!  The baked cod was quite delicious as well.  I recommend both!

VALUE:  Fried Cod sold for $11 per pound, and sides are sold ala carte.  They also have an 8-piece fried shrimp dinner that goes for $8 and includes two sides.  Kid's meals include fried mac & cheese with fries for $3.50.  All dinners include 1 hush puppy....BONUS!

CONDIMENTS:  Small containers of ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, hot sauce, and butter are available at the end of line along with individual packets of salt, pepper, and lemon juice.  Love the small containers over the individual packets.
 

Side Dishes (3 of 5)

VARIETY:  Spaghetti, Cole Slaw, Green Beans, French Fries, and Hush Puppies (6).
 
TASTE:  I thought the spaghetti at SRPD was great, especially with grated parmesan cheese on top.  The cole slaw and green beans were pretty standard, as were the hush puppies, but standard hush puppies are ALWAYS good!

VALUE:  I felt that $1.50 per individual side dish was a little steep on top of $11 per pound of cod, plus beverages, plus desserts.  This is NOT an all-inclusive dinner, which may be attractive for many people.  It was the first "per-pound" fish fry we have been to so it was slightly unusual.

Beverages and Desserts (2 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  $2 Wine (Red or White), $1 canned soda (Coke products), iced tea, water, coffee.  Nothing special here, but wine is a nice option to have.

DESSERTS:  A nice mix of Pie ($1.25), Cake ($1), and Cookies/Brownies/Cupcakes ($0.50).  I did see some red velvet cupcakes and lots of desserts that cater to the chocoholics such as myself.  We decided to forgo the extra cost for dessert since we were going to another fish fry later.  The dessert table did look quite nice.  Very impressive!!
 

Atmosphere and Extras (3 of 5)

With the anticipation of visiting SRPD in North County, expectations were high.  The atmosphere of the fish fry was delightful.  People of all ages talking, smiling, eating, drinking, and having a good time.  The atmosphere was great.  Joe Eaton came over and talked to us for a little bit and took care of us while we were there.  Super nice guy.  Thanks Joe!  The staff was extremely friendly, and they were dressed in matching fish fry aprons.  I can't remember if Father Tom had one on as well.  If he didn't, somebody get him a matching apron!! 

Extras included clam chowder ($4 or $6) at a separate table.  Also, the format of the dinner was quite different than we are used to seeing.  Everything was sold separately, which isn't too kind on the wallet; however, make sure you take advantage of the cod sold by the pound.  Its by far the best part of the meal, and you might as well get you a healthy portion because you don't find cod that tasty too often.  Its top notch for sure.

Once we got directions to the correct church (GPS took us to a totally incorrect church), it was obvious where we were supposed to go because they have signs out on the street and above the entrance where you go in.  Once you enter, the line flows very nicely.  We were definitely the newbies since we were unfamiliar with the per-pound aspect of the fish fry.  I'm sure we were holding things up!  Regardless, the line kept moving, and there was no question where everything was located inside the room.  Signs everywhere told you what they had and how much it was.  Nicely done!!

Overall (3 of 5)

Our Lady of Sorrows has an absolutely beautiful church, and I enjoyed every bit of looking at its imposing structure next to the fish fry hall.  With plenty of signage and direction to the delicious fried cod, the fish fry had all the elements of a cozy little fish fry.  The fried cod patty was tender and flaky, and their weekly "special" is something to look forward to if cod is not your thing.  The sides were good, and the beverage table is not to be missed.  The beverage selection is good, but most of all the friendly staff and friends of the parish is what makes this fish fry great.  Thanks to everyone at Our Lady of Sorrows for putting on a great and enjoyable fish fry to everyone in our group!!


Fish and Main Dishes (3 of 5)

VARIETY:  Baked or Fried Cod, and Fried Shrimp.  Cheese pizza for the non-fish eaters and kids.  They also offer a “special” every week.  This week’s special was Pasta Primavera.  Next week is gourmet grilled cheese.
 
TASTE:  The fried cod fillet was soft and flaky for a fish patty.  Very good.  I didn’t try the fried shrimp.  The homemade pasta primavera was very good, with lots of chunks of peppers, onions, and other goodness.

VALUE:  $8.00 for a 2-piece dinner, and $6.00 for a 1-piece dinner.  $6 for a Shrimp dinners with 6 shrimp.  $6 for a “special” plate dinner.  Dinners include two sides, choice of bread, a dessert, and iced tea or coffee.  They were selling extra cod fillets for $4, shrimp (6) for $5, and baked cod (2) for $5.00.  Cheese pizza for $2.

CONDIMENTS:  Two types of tartar sauce, one included dill….a nice change up.  Ketchup and cocktail sauce in individual tubs.  They also had a bowl of shredded parmesan….nice touch!!

Side Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Mac & Cheese, French Fries, Cole Slaw, Green Beans, Potato Salad, Hush Puppies, and Applesauce. 

TASTE:  The potato salad was homemade, it seemed, with a nice flavor.  The cole slaw was very good, as was the mac & cheese.  I didn’t taste the others

VALUE:  The portions were on the smaller side, I felt, compared to many other fish frys I had been to, and extra side portions are $1.25.


Beverages and Desserts (4 of 5)

BEVERAGES: Tea, and Coffee were complimentary with dinner.  $1.00 for Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite.  $2 for beers that included Bud Light and I think Budweiser.  Bottled Water was available for $1.00.
 
DESSERTS: The dessert table looked great.  They had a great variety of cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats.  They had plenty in the chocolate department, which always makes me happy.  Chocolate cake with chocolate icing, YES PLEASE!!

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)

The people at Our Lady of Sorrows are certainly passionate about their events.  Everyone was so very nice, and they all seemed to be having a great time.  Ev and John Corich came over and said hello, along with a variety of the other staff.  I always love meeting great people at fish frys, and this one was at the top of that list! 
 
I didn’t see too much other stuff going on at this fish fry such as raffles, music, etc., but they did have big trays to carry your food along on, which was nice.  The plastic utensils were a little on the small side, which I found it tough to use with my giant hands, but I made it work.  I did like the 3-tiered rack they provided the utensils in.

With signs out on Kingshighway and along the way on Rhodes, there was no mistake which way to go.  Once you got inside, there was great signage as to the different stations along the way.  Beverages and Desserts were amply marked, and the flow clockwise around the room helped keep things moving.  I found that for the size of the line we waited in, it moved rather slow for its size.  That being said, it gave us much more time to talk to some of the nice people at the fish fry that much longer.
